Faust (of Part 1, Part 2): * see EndNote<A>

tragic play in 2 parts, Goethe's magnum opus; first appeared 1790 as Faust, a Fragment; a full preliminary version, Part One, was completed in 1806 & published 1808.  Faust Part Two was finished in 1831 & published posthumously 1832.  The focus in Part 1 is the soul of Faust (sold to the devil); in contrast Part Two looks at social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics.

Hellenes of Pericles's age is to the Roman of Caesar's:

Pericles (495-429 BC) led Athens 461 to 429 BC; Spengler identifies him with the high summer period in Apollonian Culture.  Caesar (100-44 BC) was a leading Roman politician from 60 BC.  Spengler identifies him with the late autumn/early Winter of the Apollonian Civilization.  Thus by way of analogy, Faust part 1 (the Gothic flavour) reflects the Culture of the Summer, Faust part 2 reflects the Civilization of the Winter

Plato:

423-347 BC; Spengler identifies him with the Autumn of Apollonian Civilization, the author of a great conclusive system

Kant:

Zeno:

490-430 BC; Spengler identifies him with the Winter of Apollonian Civilization, a period of deep questioning, probing, testing, full of disbelief, atheism, & agnosticism, when philosophy was detached from mathematics & dominated by seeking to provide ethical & social ideals for life (rather then ontology)

Schopenhauer:

1788– 1860; Spengler identifies him with the Winter of Faustian Civilization, a period of deep questioning, probing, testing, full of disbelief, atheism, & agnosticism, when philosophy was detached from mathematics & dominated by seeking to provide ethical & social ideals for life (rather then ontology)
