Roger Bacon:
(1219-1292) English philosopher & Franciscan friar emphasized the study of nature through empiricism. Sometimes regarded as a wizard, famed for the story of his mechanical or necromantic brazen head. Seen as one of the earliest European advocates of the modern scientific method inspired by Aristotle and by Arab scientist Alhazen.
Thebes:
ancient Egyptian city located on east bank of the Nile, 500 miles south of the Mediterranean (modern Luxor). The main city of the fourth Upper Egyptian nome, the capital of Egypt during the Middle & New Kingdoms. Close to Nubia and the eastern desert, with its valuable mineral resources and trade routes. Also a cult centre & the most venerated city of ancient Egypt during its heyday. Thebes included the temples of Karnak & Luxor & urban area, plus the western bank, with it large necropolis.
Babylon:
Key kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia from 18th to 6th centuries BC, on the Euphrates; originally a small Akkadian town (2300 BC). After king Hammurabi created a short-lived empire in the 18th century BC, he built Babylon up into a major city; S.Mesopotamia became Babylonia & the city eclipsed Nippur as a holy city. After being destroyed and then rebuilt by the Assyrians it became the capital of the short lived Neo-Babylonian Empire (609-539 BC); its Hanging Gardens of Babylon were 1 of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Between 1770-1670 BC and 612-320 BC it was the largest city in the world, first to reach a population above 200,000.
Benares:
(aka Varanasi) city on the Ganges in N. India; famous for its muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works & sculpture. During the time of Buddha, it was part of the Kingdom of Kosala. The Buddha founded Buddhism here around 528 BC when he gave his first sermon, "The Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dharma". The Chinese traveler Xuanzang (aka Hiuen Tsiang) visited the city around 635 AD, stated that the city was a centre of religious and artistic activities, it extended for about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) along the western bank of the Ganges. The city's religious importance continued to grow in the 8th century, when Adi Shankara established the worship of Shiva as an official sect of Varanasi.
