Aristotle (on the Soul):

In 350 BC Aristotle wrote De Anima (On the Soul).  For Aristotle the biologist, the soul is not an exile from a better world, living in an ill-housed & base body.  On the contrary, the soul’s essence is defined by its relationship to an organic structure; it is not separate from your body but is an aspect of your body.  Humans, animals & plants have souls, the intrinsic principles of animal & vegetable life.  He says a soul is “the actuality of a body that has life,”.  Life is the capacity for self-sustenance, growth & reproduction.  The soul is the form of a natural, organic body.  He did not believe in the immortality of the Soul, or in an afterlife.  When your body dies, the Soul dies with it.  Our soul allows us to think, like any other organ (the heart pumps blood, the soul allows thought)
