Leonardo (head of Christ- "Last Supper" unfinished): *

It was common to paint directly onto the walls of building, but Leonardo was not trained in this 'fresco' technique.  He experimented to slow down the drying of the paint; he made a poor choice of materials & his experiment went disastrously wrong.   As well the convent was extremely humid, so the painting began deteriorating while Leonardo was still alive.  Over the centuries circumstances have not been kind; the refectory has been flooded, used as a stable.  There have been many attempts to restore The Last Supper, most of which have done more harm than good.  Virtually none of the original paint remains, and critics claim we can no longer regard this as a Leonardo painting.  This detail below strongly suggest Leonardo did not complete Christ’s head, but is this also the result of centuries of deterioration?
