physiological:
The judgement of character based on outward or external appearances. For Spengler the externals are the form world of the Great Cultures. Most critical is the prime symbol of the Great Cultures, in which the idea of the Culture is expressed. The prime symbols are the expression of the soul. We only see the BECOME and not he BECOMING of the Prime Symbol. The historian must first identify the Prime Symbols and then attempt to reconstruct the becoming (not the become which he sees, which is dead). This process is what Spengler means by physiognomic. It is opposed by the Scientific cause effect historical interpretations which seeks and endless chain of causation, and which deals only with dead facts not a living soul.
