Pataliputra: * 

built initially in 490 BC as a small fort near the Ganges river.  Its central location led rulers of successive dynasties to base their administrative capital here; situated at the confluence of the Ganges, Gandhaka and Son rivers, it formed a "water fort” and this allowed it dominate the river trade of the Indo-Gangetic plains during Magadha's early imperial period. It attracted merchants and intellectuals from all over India.
