The Roman Stoic (faithlessly observed ritual forms):*

Bas-relief from the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Rome (now in the Capitoline Museum) carved between 177 to 180 AD, from the decoration of a triumphal arch erected in AD 176 in the Roman Forum at the foot of the Capitoline Hill to celebrate the Emperor’s victories over the Germanic peoples and Sarmatians.

It shows Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD) and members of the Imperial family offering sacrifice in gratitude for success against Germanic tribes.  In the backgrounds stands the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitolium.  Together with the other two panels it depicts an episode in the life of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
