“Knowledge is Virtue” (Socrates): *
a quote taken form Plato's Protagoras dialogue, where a discussion occurs concerning the nature of sophists, the unity of virtue & whether it could be taught. Protagoras had a great reputation as a teacher & begins by saying that a good Sophist can make his students into good citizens by teaching civic virtue. Socrates says that this is fine and good, but that he personally believes that this is not feasible since virtue cannot be taught. He gives examples. Protagoras says his claim that virtue can be taught is better made by a story. Eventually they agree, all virtues are essentially knowledge. Socrates seems to accept the argument that knowledge is virtue, & this leads to a corollary: virtue can in fact be taught.
