ILLUSTRATION B

The 7 Last words of Christ  Haydn   1787

orchestral work for the Good Friday service at Oratorio de la Santa Cueva (Holy Cave Oratory) in Cádiz, Spain.  In 1787 Haydn adapted it for string quartet and in 1796 as an oratorio (with both solo and choral vocal forces), and he approved a version for solo piano..  Haydn uses an extremely wide range of tonalities for a composition of the 18th century, clearly anticipating Beethoven in its tonal freedom.

Siegfried's Funeral March    Wagner 1876

from Twilight of the Gods last of 4 music dramas (The Ring of the Nibelung)

The opera’s title (Götterdämmerung) is a translation into German of the Old Norse phrase Ragnarök, which in Norse mythology refers to a prophesied war among various beings and gods that ultimately results in the burning, immersion in water, and renewal of the world. However, as with the rest of the Ring, Wagner's account diverges significantly from his Old Norse sources.
