Vignola to Bernini: *
Vignola (1507-73) Italian architect of Mannerism, famous for the Villa Farnese at Caprarola & the Jesuits' Church of the Gesù in Rome. One of 3 architects responsible for spreading the Italian Renaissance throughout W Europe. He worked with Michelangelo who had a major influence on him; after 1564 he carried on his work at St Peter's, constructing the 2 subordinate domes according to Michelangelo's plans. In 1556, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese commissioned him to build the Villa Farnese (1559-73). It sits on an earlier pentagonal fortress, a fine examples of Renaissance architecture, ornament is used sparingly to achieve proportion & harmony, the severe design complements the site. This style, Mannerism, was a reaction to the ornate High Renaissance designs of 20 years earlier. Vignola in his youth had been heavily influenced by Michelangelo. His planned for a pentagon constructed around a circular colonnaded courtyard where paired Ionic columns flank niches containing busts of the Roman Emperors, above a rusticated arcade

Bernini (1598-1680) famous for his sculpture but also a successful architect who achieved considerable & lasting effects here as well. Notably the Piazza San Pietro (1656–67), the piazza and colonnades in front of St. Peter's Basilica, and also the Baldachin of St Peters. The building he perhaps took the most joy in design (since he was able to build it from scratch) was the richly ornamented oval church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale (1658-61) for the Jesuit novitiate.
