Venetian music (contemporary with Lear): * see EndNote<A>

Shakespeare’s King Lear was first performed in 1606.  Giovanni Gabrieli ( 1554-1612) was an Italian composer and organist, one of the most influential musicians of his time, represents the culmination of the style of the Venetian School, at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms.

 

Elizabethan stage:

props were far & few between, scenery was not employed, the sets were minimalist.  The drama was a product of the gestures & words of the actors,.  Costume was very important in presenting the socials status, gender & nationality of the character.

 

esoteric:

understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest; recondite; belonging to the select few.

 

immanent:

remaining within; indwelling; inherent
