Propylrea: *

The structure consists of a central building with 2 adjoining wings on the west (outer) side, one to the north & 1 to the south.  The core is the central building, having a double facade with 6 Doric columns both to the western entry portal & the eastern egress portal. The central building contains the gate wall, with 5 gates, 1 for the central passageway (unpaved, which lay along the natural level of the ground), and 2 either side at the level of the building's eastern porch.  The central passageway was the culmination of the Sacred Way, which led to the Acropolis from Eleusis.

The latter (represented by Hanslick) included Brahms, Joachim, Clara Schumann & the Leipzig Conservatoire.  Their opponents were the radical progressives of Weimar, Liszt, Wagner & the New German School.  Their battle ground was over the limits of chromatic harmony & program music versus absolute music
