alluvial period:

Spengler refers to a geologic age known as the Quaternary Period,  Periods are  a subdivision of geologic time which allow geologists to cross-reference rocks & geologic events from place to place.  The Earth's history is split into a hierarchy of such divisions.  The Quaternary is the current & most recent period of the Cenozoic Era & is dated from 2.5 million years ago to the present.  Most alluviial deposits (deposits of sand &  mud formed by flowing water) are from  the Quaternary Period; they are referred to as "cover" because their sediments obscure the underlying bedrock; they include sedimentary matter deposited within recent times, especially in the valleys of large rivers.
