He fought in N Africa and later in N Europe, successful in both theatres. In the struggle between the optimates (the Senate & their supporters) and populares those who sought popular support) he supported the Senate; he marched on Rome and defeated Marius (a populares) in battle. In 81 BC, after his 2nd march on Rome, he revived the office of dictator, inactive since the Second Punic War over a century before & used his powers to enact reforms to the Constitution, to restore the primacy of the Senate and limit the power of the tribunes. His rule was also marked by political purges, exiles and state executions. He held a second consulship, retired to private life and died shortly after.
