Heraeum of Olympia: *

Original wooden columns were gradually replaced with stone as the older columns decayed or were destroyed by natural or man made causes. In the second century AD, 1 of the 2 columns in the opisthodomos was still oak.  Replacement occurred over long periods between the Archaic & Roman ages, and were carved under the influence of their respective contemporary styles.  Because of this they differ considerably in proportions & detail, evident in the columns' capitals, each one being slightly different. No remains of the entablature above the columns were found, but are believed to have been wooden.
