Calculus of Fluxions: *

The calculus notation in use today is mostly that of Leibniz, although Newton's dot notation for differentiation for denoting derivatives with respect to time is still in current use throughout mechanics and circuit analysis. This dot notation (for differentiation) places a dot over the dependent variable. That is, if y is a function of t, then the derivative of y with respect to t is:

 

Newton's notation is generally used when the independent variables denotes time. If location y is a function of t, then            denotes velocity                  and              denotes acceleration.
