the Calculus (Leibniz): *

He saw the inverse relationship (or differential) & realized the potential for a new system of mathematics, made it the cornerstone of his notation & calculus.  In 1675, he recorded his discoveries & experiments with rotation. He was acutely aware of the notation & hoped to form a precise logical symbolism.  He came to denote the infinitesimal increments of abscissas and ordinates as dx and dy, and the summation of infinitely many infinitesimally thin rectangles as a long s (∫ ), our integral symbol.
