the Laocoon group (& Renaissance sculpture): *

When the statue was found it was missing Lacoon's right arm.  There was a general desire to replace this missing piece.  Pope Clement held a contest for the best replacement, Raphael to judge the entries.  Michelangelo refused to get involved.  The winner had Laocoon's arm held out, up into the air forming a diagonal with his left leg, a heroic pose suggesting that Laocoon has a chance to fight off the serpents. In 1905 the original arm was found; the restoration was shown to be incorrect.  The original arm had been strongly bent at the elbow (as suggested by Michelangelo).
